Under general direction, to supervise paralegals providing paraprofessional services to attorneys and to perform the most complex and/or difficult paraprofessional services.

The selected candidate must successfully pass a full background investigation prior to appointment.

Typical Tasks

  • Plans, organizes, schedules, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of subordinate staff;
  • Approves and schedules vacation, sick leave, and other requests for time off;
  • Maintains work production, meets established deadlines, and makes determinations regarding emergency situations;
  • Performs complex legal research, drafts and prepares a variety of legal documents, interviews clients;
  • Interviews and recommends selection of employees;
  • Assesses long-term training needs, develops, and implements appropriate training;
  • Provides counseling and other discipline as needed (e.g. unfavorable reports, recommends suspension);
  • Analyzes operations and recommends work method and efficiency improvements;
  • Assists the administration in the development, implementation and modification of policies and procedures;
  • Evaluates policy or law changes and recommends appropriate procedures for compliance;
  • Responds to procedural questions and assists in coordinating work assignments and priorities for paralegal staff;
  • Gathers data and prepares management reports;
  • Performs related work as required.

Employment Standards
Possession of one of the following:

(1) A paralegal certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal program;
(2) A certificate of completion of a paralegal program at, or a degree from, a postsecondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester, or equivalent, units in law-related courses and that has been accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education;
(3) A baccalaureate degree or advanced degree in any subject; plus a minimum of one year of law related attorney supervised* experience; and a written declaration from that attorney* stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks;
(4) A high school diploma or GED, plus a minimum of three years of law-related attorney supervised* experience; and a written declaration from that attorney* stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks. This experience and training shall be completed no later than December 31, 2003.

  • The supervising and declaring attorney must be an active member of the California Bar for at least the preceding three (3) years, or have practiced in the federal courts of California for at least the preceding three (3) years.

Paralegals are required to certify completion of Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credits every two (2) years. These credits consist of four (4) hours of general law or a specialized area of law, and four (4) hours of legal ethics.

Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities to perform this function are typically attained through approximately three (3) years experience performing work equivalent to that of a Senior Paralegal within Santa Clara County. Completion of college level coursework in supervision or management, business administration or a related field, or lead or supervisory work experience is highly desirable.
